Background of the Study
Infertility is a multifaceted issue that carries profound psychological implications for couples, often leading to emotional distress, anxiety, and depression (Adeniyi, 2023). In Ilesa West, cultural expectations regarding family and procreation intensify the emotional burden experienced by infertile couples (Ogunwobi, 2024). Recent empirical studies reveal that the stigma and social pressure associated with infertility contribute to marital discord and reduced self-esteem (Chukwu, 2023). The psychological impact extends beyond individual distress, affecting relational dynamics and community perceptions (Ifeoma, 2025). This study critically examines the emotional challenges that infertile couples encounter, including feelings of inadequacy, social isolation, and chronic stress (Okafor, 2023). By contextualizing infertility within cultural and socio-economic frameworks, the research aims to illuminate its far-reaching psychological consequences and inform the development of comprehensive support systems (Umeh, 2023).
Statement of the Problem
Infertility in Ilesa West has significant psychological repercussions for couples, yet research on its impact remains sparse (Nwosu, 2023). The societal stigma and internalized negative emotions contribute to marital tension and individual mental health issues (Eze, 2024). The lack of targeted interventions and counseling services exacerbates these challenges, leaving affected couples without adequate support (Ogunleye, 2023). This study seeks to systematically explore the psychological effects of infertility to inform policy and improve therapeutic interventions.
